Why do you use newspapers to dry windows if they leave a dye residue?
Question:I asked a question earlier on why my homemade window cleaner (1/4 vineger + 1 quart water) left streaks.
I read that drying with newspapers was good, but so far the dyes have left a purple residue on my fridge shelf (white + glass). Hmm. Maybe you're supposed to dry them on the newspapers and not actually wipe the glass with them?
Answers:
Try coffee filters next time. They're GREAT for cleaning glass.
you use newspaper because it isn't supposed to leave lint or streaks, but sometimes it does leave behind dye. newsprint (newspaper without the print, usually for sketching) doesn't, but it's inconvenient to keep a roll or pad of that around for some folks.
guess what works just as well, if not better: coffee filters.
they're really cheap and store as compactly as a roll of paper towels. their small, round shape and size feels just right in the hand while cleaning, too. i learned this trick while bartending where keeping mirrors perfect was important. i've kept coffee filters on hand ever since.
The reason that the newspapers leave the purple streak is because the ink is not dry. Try using papers that are older than a day so the ink can dry.
I use 100% vinegar, but I think newspaper is only good with mirrors. I found it left ink on glass too.
To dry glass:
Instead of News print try Coffee Filters, they are 100% virgin paper and do not leave behind any lint.
:)
Use coffee filters, they work great and won't leave any residue behind.
