Why does my homemade window and glass cleaner leave streaks?
Question:I have been cleaning the glass shelves in my fridge and my windows with this formula:
1 quart water
1/4 cup vinegar
I don't have a spray bottle right now, but I use a sponge. I like to use organic and environmental friendly products. I have allergies and sensitive skin.
*I tried drying with both newspapers and a microfiber cloth. I still get streaks. You can see the vinegar residue.
So far, no problems cleaning my mirror.
Any suggestions?

Try adding rubbing alcohol to speed evaporation. Here's a recipe from about.com:

It's probably from your water. You need to filter your water before adding the vinegar. Use a coffee filter and let the water run through it. You may need to change the filter if it gets "gunky". Look at the filter to see if there is a residue after filtering about a cup at a time of the water. Also, try warming the mixture to almost to hot to handle before using in the frig as that will make it dry quicker. Same with your windows.
Rub it off with kitchen towel - I had the same problem and now I can see clearly!!
It could be the water that is unfiltered...but do you think the companies that make glass cleaners filter thier water? Probably not.
Adding alcohol will help. And maybe you put in to much vinegar. But simply, just make sure to keep wiping the glass until it is dry.
I have a big glass table. I spray everything, wipe with one rag. Then I take a second rag and wipe it again, until it is dry. This way no wetness is left on the glass, thus, no streaks will be present. I have even cleaned this way usuing just water. As long as you remove all the wetness and make sure it doesn't dry on the surface, it will be clean.
Try reducing the vinegar to 1/8 cup and add 1/8 cup of ammonia. Make sure the sponge is clean. If unsure, put the sponge in the micro for a minute or so.
To clean your glass:
Try Club Soda to clean glass, the glass will not have spots or streaks.
:)
because miss lady you must use newspaper to clean with not paper towels you see the vinegar makes the surface kinda rough so! you use rough with rough! i clean my glass with it i mean you have to work a lil harder but it looks perfect afterwards just buf and buff
