Can you wash and dry a down comforter with out ruining it?

Question:

Answers:
Washing Down Comforter
When it's time for cleaning mattresses and bedding, always remember to check manufacturer's care labels first. In many cases, the label on a comforter will recommend dry cleaning. If this is the case, don't throw the comforter into the washing machine. If your comforter can be washed in the machine, use a gentle cycle, a mild detergent and distribute the comforter evenly around the agitator. Dry the comforter in the dryer using a clean pair of sneakers and a couple of dryer sheets to keep it smelling fresh.=)

i wash mine every 6 months, i have found as long as it is the pocketed type of comforter and your washer can hold it, you can wash these things, it may look ruined when it comes out of the washer, but after it dries in the drier for a while, it will retain its usual awesome self. : ) i work in a hotel and we wash the feather duvet's here. same concept.
Both answers are good, but. Check and make sure the covering can be washed. The down ALWAYS can, but if the covering is not washable, you have to dry clean it. I do mine at the laundromat, in the large front loaders. I put the pillows and the comforter in the same machine. I put the comforter in the dryer, on medium, with a pair of clean sneakers. Dry until completely dry. The same with the pillows, in another dryer.
This may be a silly question, but why do you put sneakers in with the comfortor?
