What is the best way to clean a rug without causing the colors to run?
Question:
Answers:
Do not use any liquid of any sort on an area rug. Not only can it cause the colors to run, but most detergent based cleaners that are liquid will leave a residue that will actually attract dirt from shoes and dust from the air to make the rug dirty in short order.
We recommend using a dry cleaner that comes in a granular application because it won't void most manufacturer's warranties nor cause the problems above. Resolve, Capture and ChemDry all make these dry carpet and upholstery cleaners. They are easy to use, you simply spread a layer over the fiber, agitate carefully where there are stains allow to dry and vacuum up the residue. You will really notice how much your rug's colors brighten up.
If it's just a spot you're trying to remove, pour a little bit of laundry detergent in a bowl and fill it with warm water. Then use a scrub brush to get the stain out. It always works wonders for me. But if you're trying to clean the entire rug, then I'm not too sure this is the trick for you... It could take a while crawling around on the entire floor!
Good Luck!
depending on the size of the rug -- and if you have a fence --I find the old school way of beating it on the fence very effective.
Depend´s on the size of the rug & the weather. I can suggest you wait for a hot suuny day. But if this is not possible , because you want your rug cleaned now, then I would say . Wash with cold water, use some good old fashioned soap bar soap. You can buy this in your local hardware store. Soak the rug in the bath tub with cold water. Rub the soap on, use a soft brush so you won´t break the fibers . Give a good rub with the soap & brush . rinse well. Hang outside in the sun to dry, If you have a big enough towel to cover the rug, then roll the rug in the towel , this will help drain out most off the water before you hang it up. As long as your rug has plenty fresh air around it whilst drying , then it should be okay to hang inside
use cold water, never warm or hot.
