Why do carpets pick up so much lint and dust?

Question:

Answers:
There are actually several reasons but the major cause is static electricity. A secondary cause is that people unwittingly use liquid cleaners to spot treat their carpet without realizing that many leave a residue that actually attracts dust from the air and dirt from your shoes. That is why having scotchguarded carpets is such a good idea. Most treated carpets have teflon as a chemical component which literally deflects the dust and dirt and keeps it from attaching to the fiber so that it can be easily vacuumed up. At the same time, it enables liquid spills to bubble up and not soak into the fiber so that they can be easily blotted up without the use of liquid detergent based solvents.
