I accidently caught my iron skillet on fire. How do I reseason it?

Question:I left it in the oven while preheating (accident) and when I looked in the oven it was burning. Now it has about 1/8 inch of charcoal yuck on the bottom, can it be saved?

Answers:
First, use a brillo pad to clean it out.

This about.com article has a great explaination of how to reseason it:

A good cast iron skillet should be able to take just about any abuse.

Yes it can be saved. I once found one in a old garage covered with crud and rust. Just clean off all the charcoal and clean it up good then re-season it by warming it up and putting a light coating of oil on it.
If it is cast iron, you can try soaking it in warm soapy water for a long time (2 days). Keep working at scraping the burnt stuff off the pan. Once you get it all off, coat the entire pan with vegetable oil, then put it in the oven for about 20 minutes at 350F. Watch it closely! It might take a couple tries at seasoning to get it back to form. If it is beyond repair, best just to fork over some money for a new one. Best of luck.
yes, just scrub all the black off with an sos or something then rinse well, pour in some oil, get it hot then brown some flour in it. then just rinse it with water well. and reoil the bottom. just be sure to rinse all the soap off real well b4 cooking the flour in it.
MAY SOUND REALLY ODD, BUT HERE GOES! TAKE IRON SKILLET OUTSIDE AND SCRUB DOWN WITH DIRT... USE LEAVES TO WIPE THE DIRT OFF. CARRY INSIDE HOUSE AND CLEAN WITH DISH WASHING SOAP REAL GOOD...
THEN USE BRILLO AND SCRUB REAL WELL... MAKE SURE REALLY CLEAN... COAT ENTIRE SKILLET WITH COOKING OIL... JUST PUT LITE COAT OF OIL, CAN COAT IT WITH A PAPER TOWEL... PLACE IN PREHEATED 450 DEGREE OVEN FOR ABOUT 30 TO 40 MINUTES...
KEEP A WATCH ON IT THROUGH THIS PROCESS FOR MANY OVENS ARE DIFFERENT... TURN OVEN OFF AND LEAVE SKILLET IN OVEN UNTIL COOL.
NEXT TIME YOU COOK IN SKILLET, REPEAT THIS PROCESS. MAY HAVE TO DO TWO OR THREE TIMES
AND THEN YOU WILL NOTICE THE SEASONING PROCESS HAS TAKEN EFFECT.
GOOD LUCK!

Yes, you can save it. Put some warm water and a little detergent in the skillet and soak for a few minutes, then use a scraper or metal spatula to loosen the charcoal yuck to remove. Then clean the skillet with SOS type pads. Then wash the skillet again and rub the skillet with oil to season it.

I used this method on an old iron skillet that I bought at a yard sale...the poor thing had been sitting outside, partially filled with water and had rusted. It looks and cooks great now!
