I buy a lot of furniture on the secondary market that I re-condition, re-make or refinish and here is what I do. Wrap the furniture without the cushions or upholstery, if possible, in a layer of newspaper. Then on a flat surface of the item, put several tablets of activated charcoal and wrap with another layer of newspaper. Leave it alone for at least a week. This will draw the odor from inside the wood out to the surface. Then wash the entire item with Krud Kutter available at the Lowes home improvement store. It will cut through all 250 chemicals that are sitting on the surface of the wood, their residues and leave the surface really clean. Make certain to use it straight, rinse the sponge often as it accumulates the yellowish, brown residue and dry the surfaces with a soft, non-scratching cloth.
