How do you keep a house fresh with smokers?

Question:I live with someone who smokes. The house is musty. I don't allow anyone to smoke in my room and I try to keep my door closed at all times. What else can I do to keep my room fresh? I don't smoke and I hate the smell.

Answers:
SMOKELESS ASHTRAYS. There are 'neutral' air sprays and Febreze just came out with one for the air, also. Plus for furniture, carpet & drapes. An air purifier helps also (don't get the ones with filters - - filters are expensive). Air purifier for your own room only and your purchase.

Any expense for the shared living area should be at the smokers' expense. Not only is it a good idea for them but it is showing courtesy for you. Their expense because it is something they can take with them where ever they go.

I'm a smoker, but I do NOT smoke around non-smokers, never in home of non-smokers nor their car. If I'm staying (& paying) at someone's place, I go outside. If it is my own place & a non-smoker staying here, then I got smokeless ashtray.

COURTESY RULES. Smokers should NEVER smoke in bedroom, bathroom or kitchen. There is no one that hooked who can't finish what they are doing in the bathroom & have cigarette later. Bedroom, get up & smoke sitting up in the living room = less likely to fall asleep with lit cigarette. Kitchen is no place for ashes & food; however, visiting at kitchen table OK.

You say you "live" with some one so I assume that you are not married, MOVE OUT. If you own the house or are responsible for the place tell the other person if they want to smoke go out side or GET OUT.
See if the smokers will smoke outside.
Buy a HEPA filter for your room or an Ionic filter (you can find at Brookstone's, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Sharper Image, etc.).
Use oil-based wall plug in's.
I hate smoke smell and I feel for ya!
Boy you really asked for it living with someone who smokes. the smoke gets in your clothing and on the walls of the house.

You could try to get them to change brands, some smokes smell worse than others. Marlboro's have a pretty bad smell.

Other than that short of getting them to smoke outside, you are going to have some smell that is always going to be there.

You can try the smokers candles, or just open the windows from time to time to let in fresh air, keep airfreshner and candles around.
Smokers just don't get it, do they?
THEY demand the right to smoke--- and also suck up fresh air.

THEY, however, clearly do not think YOU have the right to fresh air in your apartment. You are stuck with the smelly residue of the smoke on your food, your furniture, clothing, and household goods almost no matter what you do.

You might think the air is relatively clean, so try this: Take a clean white damp cloth and wipe off the television screen. If it is wiping off some yellow, you are being slowly poisoned by the nicotine in the air. Somebody is going to get lung cancer.

Move ---into a non-smoking household or apartment, or educate your 'smoking addicts' to smoke ONLY outside of your abode.
Fiddlesticks I have to disagree with you. Not all smokers are selfish. If I am smoking and I see someone that is bothered by it I will either put it out or move outside. I know I don't have the right to light up wherever I want to and I don't.

As for the smell of smoke I use febreeze for the house and you would never know that a smoker lived here. I am very very liberal with it.

Just for the record I am trying to quit but it is HARD!
You can control and in most cases eliminate cigarette smoke in your home with a space certified filterless air purifier manufactured in the USA. To learn more go to www.freshairliving.com/welcome & use passcode "guest"
my husband and i both are smokers. we got new windows and started smoking outside so we don't get them nasty.
i never knew how bad our house smelled until we quit smoking inside.
get the hepa air filter. it helps more than anything else i've found.
ask the roommate to smoke outside sometimes
open windows

we have a covered screened in porch so we don't get wet if it's raining or snowing - we got it TO smoke in.
