I bought a new swivel chair but I swear it smells of something like petrol ??
Question:Its a split cow leather swivel chair.
I also had a new freezer but something is smelling of a petrol type smell. Dont think its the freezer. I cant pinpoint it with my nose..lol
Does leather smell like that? I know you can use petrol to clean any grease type marks off leather. I've never had a leather suite so I dont know if this is normal (wouldn't have thought so!)
Any ideas?
Answers:
If the chair is one of the hundreds of cheap leather imports that are doing the rounds at the minute - the smell probably is coming from the chair.
You didn't say if you had to build the chair yourself or whether it was already made as I know some companies use a car cleaning product to bring the black up looking nice.
If you can go back to the shop where you got it and have a look at the ones on display - if the smell is in the shop then you'll know its the chair.
It does clear after a while and just it does stink !.
Retired Office Furniture Seller !
It could have been the cleaner or some form of lubricant being used on the swivel part of the chair
Think the cow might have hung around with the wrong crowd..sniffing petrol, glue etc...lol
Leather can emit smells like plastic will-the smell can be somewhat like gas, but do you use gas/petrol in your home? Is there a leak coming from somewhere else?? If so, call your gas company!
Just fart plenty on the chair.
It will soon be gone my friend !
I can safely bet that the chair was made in China. Everything that comes in from there has this terrible smell - more like a petrol station forecourt than a new leather smell. Is the leather spray painted ? You really need to know or you could damage it when using cleaning products. Have you got a RANGE shop near you ? That has the same awfull smell everywhere but especially in the pictures and canvases area - cheap paint. Yes the smell will go eventually but in the mean time dont clean it untill you know just what the finish is, dyed or sprayed - don't let your supplier off the hook untill you find out then ask them for a cleaning product - if it lifts the colour take the chair back.
I'D FIRST TRY TO ISOLATE THE REAL CAUSE BY PUTTING THE CHAIR IN A SEPERATE CLOSED ROOM---BEFORE I'D TRY TO "FIX THE PROBLEM", I'D PERSONALLY REALLY WOULD WANT TO KNOW WHICH ONE IS ACTUALLY CAUSING THE ODOR PROBLEM---YOU GOTTA KNOW WHICH IS THE "REAL" PROBLEM, BEFORE YOU TRY TO REPAIR IT!---FOR THE LEATHER, TRY "LEXOL"--A TOP QUALITY OF ALL PURPOSE LEATHER CLEANER---BACK IN THE DAY, IT WORKED REAL WELL ON CLEANING MY LEATHER COATS---ONE RED, THE OTHER BLACK---NO "RUNS" ON/FOR COLORED DYES OCCURRED---"LEXOL" IS AVAILABLE AT USUAL BIG RETAILERS & UPSCALE CLOTHING & SHOE STORES!
