What is the best way to remove dust / graying on old wine glasses?
Question:I am looking to clean up some old wine glasses that have not been cleaned in a really long time. They have gotten kind of cloudy from years of dust and no cleaning. What is the best way to clean them to make them clear again? Please indicate the amount of experience you have had working with glasses. :) Thanks!
Answers:
# Do use vinegar to remove general stains: vinegar is very effective at cutting through grease and will also "freshen up" crockery in general. However, it can leave a potent smell.
# Do use baking soda to remove stains from tea and coffee: dip a damp cloth in baking soda and rub gently, before rinsing clean.
# Do use white vinegar in your dishwasher: place a cup on the bottom rack and run for the full cycle to prevent a soapy film on your glassware. You should also use a cup of white vinegar once a month to reduce the soap scum on the inner machinery.
# Do use lemon juice on a variety of stains: choose one that is bright and firm, with a fine-grained skin and that feels heavy as this will be a better indicator of juicy flesh than overall size. Lemon juice will usually work on the same stains as vinegar (e.g., hard-water stains) but it will smell nicer.
soak them in dish soap and bleach for a couple hours wile you are doing other chores around the house and you need to do is rinse them and voila!
Mix equal parts of white vinegar and hot water. Let them sit in this mixture for about 2 hours. Then dry them with old news paper. I know it sounds crazy but it will work.

To retain the luster and brilliance of crystal glasses , wash each piece separately in warm water with a little liquid detergent added: rinse in clear water. dry and then drain on kitchen paper or tea towel.
Leave badly stained cut glass glass over night in a mixture of water, detergent and a few drops of ammonia. To remove lime deposits, fill the glass with distilled water, leave it for a week , then gently remove the crust with a toothbrush.
If glassware- such as a decanter becomes stained inside, put in a tablespoon of sliver sand, obtainable from a gardening shop, and a week solution of warm water and liquid detergent.
Swill the contents round, but check frequently that the glass is not being scratched. Hope this is of help to you.
