Laundry detergent clumping on clothes in washing machine?
Question:For the last few weeks, the regular Tide degergent I've been using in my washing machine has been clumping up on the clothes. It's an old machine that came with this house when we bought it last year, but I haven't had any problems until recently. The only way I can do laundry now is if I let the machine fill with water first and hold the cup of powder detergent under the water when it comes out to fill the machine.
Why is this happening? More importantly, how do I stop this from happening? It's ruining a lot of clothes. My bf washed a load the other day without first letting the soapy water fill the machine, and a few pieces came out with huge clumps of white chunky detergent. Even after washing the pieces 2-3 times again with just water, the detergent clumps didn't come out. This is the same detergent I've used for years, here and in other homes/machines previous to this. Should I just keep washing by first filling the machine with already diluted soapy water, or is there a fix?

This may sound stupid, but it IS very possible. Are you SURE that the washer is still agitating? Some brands of washers will fill, advance, and drain, but because of certain things wrong, do NOT agitate... Unless the soap is VERY wet or VERY old, it will break up during agitation.
i had that same problem i started adding less soap to the laundry and put the soap in first then run the water than add the clothes. so rememebre the less soap the less clumpiness and also try putting less clothes in the machine. your other option is get a new machine
Put detergent in befoe the clothes and do not overload the machine. If you stuff the washer with too many clothes, there is no room for aggitation.
switch to a liquid detergent for a while. I also suggest that you add a few drops of orange peel oil to the wash. That will help wash any back-up residue that might be in the out-take pipes.
TRY LIQUID LAUNDRY DETERGENT---OR, BREAK UP THE DRY DETERGENT IN YOUR HAND ,BEFORE PUTTING IT INTO AN "EMPTY" WASHING MACHINE---START THE MACHINE FIRST WITHOUT ADDING CLOTHING, SO AS TO ALLOW THE DETERGENT TO DISSOLVE ( YOU CAN SWISH IT& WATER WITH YOUR HAND TO HELP MIXING BEFORE ADDING CLOTHING TO MACHINE)---THEN , ADD YOUR CLOTHING--------------MOST IMPORTANTLY:"DO NOT OVER USE DETERGENT"!----ALSO, YOU MIGHT CONSIDER USING A GOOD LIQUID ,HIGH QUALITY, FABRIC SOFTENER (e.g. "DOWNEY"/"SNUGGLES") IN YOUR FINAL RINSE---WHICH WILL NEGATE THE SOAP RESIDUE REMAINING WITHIN YOU CLOTHING FABRICS!---FROM MY "WASHIE-CLOTH-ZEE" COURSE #101 FOR YOU!
there are to many clothes in the machine so the powder gets stuck & clumps. Sometimes when you use less powder it does not get your clothes as clean, I add a little extra water in the machine drawer if I have a large load or change to liquid tablets there great dissolve in the wash
It may be the water, it may be the machine. you can either mix it up in a pitcher with some warm water before you put it in the machine, or switch to liquid detergent. I prefer liquid so I don't run into that kind of mess. Run a half cup of white vinegar in with your rinse load. You won,t smell it when it is dry, and it gets rid of residue in the machine and on the clothes.
