Any ideas on how to make air fresheners?
Question:Im tired of wasting money on air fresheners that stop working after a couple of weeks. I want to make some of my own, that smell great, and lasts a nice while. Any ideas on how to keep a room smelling fresh and pretty??
Answers:
You could sew/crochet/knit a breathable pouch, and place a nice smelling soap in it (I have one of these that still works after 2-3 years). (Dove soaps usually have a strong pleasant smell, though they aren't the best if you have allergies.)
Also, you could dry flowers and/or herbs that have an appealing scent (you hang them upside down for about a week to dry them) and put them in a decorative bowl, or small, breathable closed container of some sort (this way the flowers/herbs won't get dusty). (I grow spearmint in my garden for this purpose, and it makes good tea.)
Also, boiling something fragrant will make your house smell nice. (Again, dried spearmint, or and mint, will give you a fresh scent, also tea bags, cranberries, blueberries, etc.)
what i use in my car could work in your house too...put a few nice smelling dryer sheets under the couch/chairs.the scent will fill the room and at 50 to a box its much cheaper. works great in the car, you may need a few more to do a room tho.
You can get some cheap knee highs or nylons from a dollar store and cut them up to fill them with coffee, dried flowers(to freshen them you just crush the petals a little and add a couple of drops of essential oils. You can even make your own freshener for the fridge, you can cut a lemon in half scoop out the guts and fill it with salt, your fridge will smell wonderful or you can do as above with the coffee, coffee absorbs odors.
Dissolve baking soda in 2 cups hot water, add lemon juice, pour into spray bottle, spray into air as air freshener.
Use lavender heads inside mesh bags behind sofa cushions and in bowls around the room. crush to refresh.
These are all natural - and smell amazing. You will need:
An empty water bottle
Cone shaped coffee filters (small is fine)
Essential oil (from the health food store) - choose your favorites. (I like lavender, patchouli, and sandalwood.)
Take an empty 16 oz. water bottle. You can put colored water in it or some nice pebbles if you like. Just something to keep it from falling over. Put the cap back on.
Take a cone shaped coffee filter. Place it upside down over the top of the bottle. Sprinkle a few drops of your favorite essential oil on the coffee filter. Place the bottle on a dish so that the oil doesn't drip on your furniture. (If it does it gets very sticky and is hard to get off.)
The oil will diffuse into the air and will last a long time. Every week or so put a few more drops of oil on the coffee filter. When the filter starts to get saturated, change it. You can use different scents in different rooms - or all the same.
This is so much nicer than burning oil or candles (and so much safer.)
Enjoy!
