How do I get the gunk off my clothes iron?
Question:My iron has white residue in the steam holes and a portion of the metal is dark and discolored. Is there anything I can use on it to remove this?

Run vinegar through the iron instead of water. That should take care of the mineral build-up. There is a product for cleaning the plate of the iron. I don't recall the name of it. I got mine at Wal-Mart. It comes in a package with two little tubes. You squirt the contents all over a cloth rag and iron away until the iron is clean. I used to have to starch military uniforms and had to clean the iron often as the spray starch would build up on the plate of the iron. I ended up getting two irons. One for starched and one for non-starched items.

The white residue is minerals. You can't really remove it from the inside of the iron but you can chip away the stuff in the holes. You should only use distilled water in a clothes iron, then you won't get that build up.
Try a cloth damp with white vinegar, turn the iron on hot and iron the vinegar soaked fabric to remove the dark build (use an old piece of cloth u don't mind throwing out.
try this...with your iron set on steam, press a clean, soft cotton rag moistened with vinegar. (You may have to clean the holes separately)
i would reccomend throwing it out and buying a new one, which will have to be done either way cause you wont get that off the inside!
fill your new iron with distilled water so you wont get that build up again!! sorry!
