vacuum cleaner and make sure you don't put it in backwards when you re-install
Vacuum then rinse with the garden hose. Allow to dry before putting back in the unit.
the best way to clean it and get rid of the dust mites etc. is to use a vacuum or even just a hand brush and remove the dust ( outside ), then give it a good rinse out with sprays of water, say from a spray hose ( only lightly, you dont wanna tear the filter). Make sure you set it to dry outside, to make sure all germs are gone.

You could clean it as others have suggested or go to the hardware store and buy better disposable filters. My husband worked in the A/C business and thought the washable filters were great when they first came out..he has since changed his mind and tossed ours in the trash....
