My down comforter smells?
Question:I bought this down comforter today at Ross and when I got home and opened up the bag it STINKS like elephant poop! Now I'm not sure if someone used this and made it smell with their gross smell..or if they tried to wash it on their own and I know you can't do that because of the feathers..you have to get them professionally dry cleaned. If i take it to the dry cleaner do you think they can get that smell out?

U.S. law requires that down be washed twice before being stuffed into a pillow, comforter, etc. So cheap-o companies do only what they can get away with...washing them twice. Twice is not enough to rid down of it's inherant stink-ola. Your comforter has not been used, it started out with the Pee-yew factor. There are comforters with hyper-clean or super-clean down. Pacific Coast and Season's are two such brands. They wash the down as many times as it takes, rendering the down not only odor free, but hypoallergenic. I would return the comforter you bought and look for another. Just read the package carefully and make sure the next one is super-clean.
i'd take it to the dry cleaners and let them see what they can do with it, it's worth a try.
What you do with this smelly comforter is put it in the bag and take or send it back to the store. And ask for your money back. and let them deal with the smell./
whoa - this is a hard one. I'd either take it to a really professional cleaner who can handle down comforters - not some rink dink - dry cleaner and see what options there are. However, if they either can't do anything or if the price isn't worth it, I'd try to get the comforter exchanged.
Down Comforters are made from duck feathers therefore, they do smell and as time goes by they will loose the smell. I had one and that is what ended up happening to me, they are expensive. If you think you cant handle the smell return it. Good Luck!
You can tumble it in your dryer on a cool setting for about a half an hour with a bounce sheet to freshen it right away and then hang it outside if possible. I know I had one that stank too. and that is what I did... It helps. Mostly it goes away after a while. They are made from Goose Down. Not duck.
Take it back to the store.
Use baking soda or febreze. Maybe hang it outside to get some fresh air.

It shouldn't smell like that. If there is any smell it would only be from the bag. More than likely if it came from Ross it was probably used and then washed. I would either get your money back or exchange it for another and make sure you open it up and smell it before you pruchase again. I doubt that the dry cleaners can do anything. Once you get the feather wet inside there could be mildew growing-yuck. Whenever you buy from discount places like that you need to thouroughly check it over and open it up before purchasing.
I wash my feather down comforter all the time...Take it to the laundrymat and use the double capasity washer, down shrinks down to practically nothing. Use small amount of detergent and let it wash.Bring acouple of tennis balls with you to dry it. I have a large capasity washer so I wash all my king size down comforters at home.Hope this helps and good luck...
You could try fabreeze.
I'd take it back to the store first. Make the salesperson take a whiff. If you get no satisfaction with the sales person, call the manager in. Stuff in sealed bags do have an odor, but not that bad.
