Answers:
Put only dark clothes together and keep your white and light colored clothes separate! That's the main rule. You may have hard or salty water, which helps to release the dye from clothes and allow it to stain other clothes--so perhaps add a water softener product to your laundry loads as well. Finally, there are products that can remove color "accidents", so look in the laundry soap section at the supermarket if there is something that got colored that you really want to fix.
Always wash whites by themselves (this includes yellows and very light colors) and wash dark clothes by themselves. Powder is hard on dark clothes, use a mild liquid.
What type of detergent are you using? This may be a big reason. Another reason could be that your washing machine is acting up, maybe confusing the cycles without you knowing about it -- happened to my friends once.
Also, how are you mixing your colors? How I always do my laundry is, of course, do all the whites at once, than move onto jeans and underwear along with darker t-shirts and such. Then I wash all of my color button-up shirts and in a separate load I wash my color t-shirts. I've never had any problems with my clothes bleeding their colors onto one another. Hope you fix your clothing problem!
Also, check out the article in the source listing, it has some good information about Washing machines.
whites must be with all whites , colors you need to wash new items alone the first time to see if the color is going to run, you can usually wash black and brown and navy together, reds and purples together, very light blue can often go with whites especially if its been washed a time or two, yellow, orange etc should be washed by itself till it doesnt stain the water anylonger. always use cold and put a cup of white vinegar in the wash . there are products used to help keep colors from running, i think one of the brands of cheer laundry soap is supposed to do that.
Usually when this happens you wash reds with reds and blacks with blacks and so on this is what is meant by similar colors, I can help you with this problem, Dye
If dye transfers from a non-colorfast item during washing, immediately bleach discolored items. Repeat as necessary BEFORE drying. On whites use color remover. CAUTION: Do not use color remover in washer, or around washer and dryer as it may damage the finish.
Stop reds from running
Unless you have a fondness for pink-tinted clothing, take one simple precaution to prevent red -- or other brightly dyed -- washable clothes from ruining your wash loads. Soak your new garments in a few cups of undiluted white vinegar for 10-15 minutes before their first washing. You'll never have to worry about running colors again!
Unset old stains
Older, set-in stains will often come out in the wash after being pretreated with a solution of 3 tablespoons white vinegar and 2 tablespoons liquid detergent in 1 quart (1 liter) warm water. Rub the solution into the stain, then blot it dry before washing
Brighten your loads
Why waste money on that costly all-color bleach when you can get the same results using vinegar? Just add 1/2 cup white vinegar to your machine's wash cycle to brighten up the colors in each load.
