Answers:
let's see, you can
a] wash it... funny... washing a sponge...
b] microwave it for 2 minutes... why don't you put a worm in too, see what happens?
c] put salts (bath salts) on it, topped with soap, then water on both sides... once again, cleaning a sponge... but FANCIER!
d] get a new one! not that expensive if you can afford bath salts and water... and soap... and a microwave!

Buy a new one.
Soak it in hot water with bleach.
soak it in bleach, and water for about a half hour or so.
Throw it away and get a new one :)
Put it in the microwave for 2 minutes.
Febreze it and put it in a microwave.
you can throw it in your dishwasher with the dishes or some people even microwave them.. or just throw it out. and get a new one, that would be cheaper.
Put it in the washing machine,or the dishwasher.
soak the sponge in water with baking soda - let it sit for 30 minutes, put the sponge in the microwave for 60 seconds, remove and rinse with tap water, let dry in the sun for 30 minutes.
Sponges are germ infested messes. When it smells, it is time to get a new one.
throw it away...that is bacteria
Soak it in 1part bleach to 10 parts water.
It's probably smelly because it's brimming with bacteria. If you're too cheap to buy a new one, please, please, disinfect it with hot water and bleach then microwave it for a few minutes. You're probably "cleaning" your dishes with a diseased sponge, ew.
If you are not too attached to it, I would suggest throwing it out and getting a new one.

A smelly sponge means that there is bacteria or fungus growing in it.

If you just can't live without it, you're best bet is just to soak it in a water/bleach solution, but then you'll never get the bleach smell out.

Just get a new one.
Put it in your microwave for 30 seconds, just make sure it is wet.
of course, buying a new sponge would have been an obvious answer if you want an entirely new one. but we've got several ways on how to get rid of the foul smell on a sponge (supposing that this sponge is for dish washing). you can have it soaked on a bowl-full of vinegar. leave for a few minutes and rinse it to remove the vinegar smell. vinegars have properties that remove foul smell. another good option is to have it disinfected through boiling it with water. leaving it on boiling water will for sure remove unwanted odor and bacteria. if you're in a hurry and does not want any other hassle, soaking it on water mixed with bleach will do just fine. make sure to leave it soaked for around 5 minutes.
If you have an automatic dishwasher, you should run it thru on the top shelf to sanitize it, it smells because of the germs. It will come out clean and smelling good.
throw it out, they dont cost that much.
I wash mine every night I just throw it in my last load of the night. You can soak them in bleach and put them in the micro wave for 2 min.
Try using a bleach solution and dry in the sunshine.
Pour undiluted White Vinegar on sponge and leave on for about one hour then rinse in hot water, or you can soak them in Baking soda and water solution this will also remove odors. Good Luck !
I boil all my sponges but depends on what it is made of I usually rinse my sponges in white vinegar immediatly after using and rinse in cold water that usualy get rid of any smell
i bet you didn't expect to get this many responses. i would have to agree with everyone saying throw it away. now granted, sponge prices have skyrocketed recently due to the recent troubles in the middle east..

get a grip, you can buy a 10 pack for a dollar! Who washes sponges???
