How do i clean home made baby blankets?
Question:i was given a lot of home made baby blankets (knit, i think, but could be crocheted - don't know enough to know the difference) that i didn't want to use initially, but now I want to use them ... but how do i get them clean once they get dirty? can i use the washing machine? dryer? how long? detergent? thanks!
Answers:
Just use the gentle cylcle and tumble dry. Good as new.
i reckon handwashing them in warm water would be best!
It depends on what the yarn is made of (probably acrylic or cotton or polyester). In either case, machine wash gentle cycle in cold water, lay flat (or hang over the shower rod) to dry. Some knit items can shrink, lose their shape, or fuzz out in the dryer.
I would wash them on a gentle setting. You may even want to hand wash. Check to see how well they tied off the ends when changing colors; that will determine hand washing or machine washing.
Dry flat or dry on a low heat.
I hope this helps you.
use woolite and wash on gentle cycle after you wash the blankets you can put them in the dryer on gentle or low setting for about 45 mins.
put them in the wash on delicate
When I make blankets I give the person one of the yarn wrappers. Can you ask for washing instructions?
Mostly you launder them just like regular blankets- machine wash warm, cool rinse, medium heat dryer. I used to use Dreft.
Wash them like you would wash your baby..Gently and let air dry. I like to wash my baby blankets in a baby wash or with baby shampoo (if you are nervous), and just let them air dry (I hung mine outside on a line).
Hope this helps.

Do not machine wash unless you are 100% certain that the blankets are made of acrylic, cotton, or "superwash wool." Have you ever put a sweater in the wash & had it shrink, pill &/or felt? That's what wool does unless it's been specially treated.
Woolite changed its formula and is no longer suitable for washing wool. (Go figure.) You can buy woolwash at any yarn store (http://www.eucalan.com will send you a free sample for a self-addressed stamped envelope), or use a tiny amount of shampoo.
Soak the blanket in lukewarm water & the wash/shampoo for 15 minutes. Gently squeeze the suds through the blanket. If you use Eucalan, there's no need to rinse. Gently squeeze the water from the blanket, then roll it in clean towels & press out as much water as you can. Do not wring!
Lay the damp blanket on a thick layer of clean, dry towels. (The bathroom floor will work, as will a bed or large table.) Let dry.
When I make baby things, I always use yarn that's machine wash/dry -- and I always tuck a note with washing instructions in with a gift.
You can wash handmade knit or crocheted baby blankets in your washing machine in cold water on the delicate cycle of your machine. Do NOT put the blankets in the clothes dryer.
Either line dry indoors or outside or lay on a flat surface for drying. (shape the blanket first).
hand wash in luke warm water unless it is wool where you need to use cold water. if you are going to machine wash, first put it in a laundry bag to keep it from catching on other garments or washing machine parts on gentle in cold water to be safe.
try putting them in a hosiery bag, they come in various sizes. use cold wash and gentle cycle. Hang to dry. Try to get washing instructions from the giver but for baby blanket i would think machine washing is fine.
Handwash in tepid water with a wool wash if they are woollen. If acylic, the machine on cold wash will be fine.
I have kids and my mother made home made baby blanketts for my kids. At first I put them on a delicate cycle with woolite and I air dry them in the dryer. If they are regular yarn you can just put them in the wash like normal and same with the dryer. There is a special baby laundry soap you can buy at wal-mart if you want but that is a waste of money.
