Could someone please tell me if mold/mildew can produce a sweet, pungent smelling odor?

Answers:
Yes, it has a smell all it's own. If you live in Florida you undoubtedly know the odor. It can make you sick. In fact it is not uncommon for entire communities of folks in Southeast Florida to become ill all at once! I lived in Archadia Florida for a year and I went for a few days complaining of a strange sickness I could not for the life of me explain. Then after mentioning it to a few people they all said the same thing-"Oh', it's mold season. Everyones getting sick now...".
That was the strangest thing. Then a short time later I got to learn of the red-tide. Ooh', that was another fun one. I happened to be working in Punta Gorda when I got a wiff of that one. It did not seem as bad as the mold going on more inland. Mold is no joke, but it can be handled by experts. I would suggest checking out anyone who claims to be an expert. There are people who will simply make a quick buck at your expense, only to disappoint you when the mold reappears again.
Remember, it's not always the guys with the biggest trucks and most expensive equipment that do the best work. Case and point- I clean carpet and I have some of the oldest, but tried and true equipment in the business. I CAN afford to stay longer and do the job right. Meanwhile the other guys pull up in their not-paid-for-yet vans and quickly move in and out, so they can pay for the bloody loans on that equipment. More often than not it is good chemicals (solutions-'green' or no) and ELBOW work that gets a job done correctly and thoroughly. I know! I'm tired tonight and I KNOW I cleaned that carpet better than anyone else could have done it today. Or at least as good.
Why am I mentioning carpet? Mold will thrive in carpet too.
TIP:
Have your carpet professionally cleaned once, then buy a good 'all in one cleaner'. The Hoover Steamvac is built MUCH better than the Bissel Proheat. MUCH MUCH better.
If you buy the Hoover, always make sure you keep the filters cleaned off. They are basically screens, but if neglected the air turbines that make the brushes spin will NOT let air through and the machine will not work right... to put it simply.
I also suggest going to a Home improvement store and getting a whole gallon of RESOLVE carpet cleaner for $11.00. The folks at Target sell the same exact thing in a 2 quart size for $13+ !! You do the math. Now when you go looking for this steam cleaning solution look in the section of the store where the mops and brooms are located. The other part of the store where the carpet cleaning machines are, it's a big rip-off for those solutions. It's called the "professional size Resolve. I used to use pricey chemicals to clean carpets with, but many of my older customers didn't like the smell of amonia. Hey, it works just as well. 'BRITE & Clean' by CELLO is another good one.
The reason I say to do it this way is simple. IF you do your floors this way, then there will not be a need for the carpet guys to use excessive water because the floor is so dirty. This will reduce mold and you will benefit by maintaining a clean carpet instead of looking at all of those stains etc. build up.
Good luck- Paul

Depending on what is molding of course it can. You can rid yourself of the mold. Depending on where it is - a bleach solution is always good. If in material..try steam cleaning first and then find a odor remover such as STOP or anything equivalent. If it will remove a urine odor it'll remove mold/mildew. Another GREAT odor remover is baking soda; if you have the ability to wash it in washing machine.
If there is a lot of starch or sugar in the object, yes.
its more an old musty smell
Yes mold can produce a sweet, pungent smelling odor. It depends on the type of mold it is.
