Answers:
I would try straight vinegar and baking soda together if that does not work try WD40 I know it sounds crazy I use it all the time when cleaning offices and homes. It is a good water repellent.
limeaway, the works, sos, some that works for mine
try a Mr Clean magic eraser - those things are amazing!
We've had this problem with an older tub before. We filled the tub up with water and poured large bottles of bleach in it. Then we let it sit, all day.
It really helped.

when you say an old fashioned white tub do you mean porcelain tub? if so, you can take comet
powder and add a little bleach to form a paste like consistency. paint it on the tub and wait about an hr and go in with a scrubbing sponge. an a tiny bit of water and scrub gently. after all the paste has been scrubbed, rinse the tub with lots of water. you will be shocked how brand new it looks and all the old stains will be gone forever. then just wipe it down once a week with whatever you normally use to clean it. if you take baths, i would scrub it gently after bathing just so you dont get bathtub ring buildup.
Your old tub may have tiny cracks in the porcelain glaze where you can't clean (too tiny) and discolorations can form. Try the bleach idea. But to keep yourself from having to do it all the time, try pricing having your tub re-surfaced. If you really like the tub, it may be worth it to you.
Yes,use soft scrub or Bon Ami with a scourpad/sponge combination. It will take some elbow grease but it always does the job.Bleach is a good starter, but if used in large amounts it can really be overwhelming due to the noxious fumes.Never mix bleach with anything other than water, and if you must use it,make sure you open windows to clear the smell.Good Luck.
CLR works good also. It takes out old rust stains, and hard water stains.
I use liquid toilet cleaner for white/porcelain sinks and it is fantastic...I would imagine it would work great for a bathtub as well.
