Cleaning hood over stove?
Question:This is a pretty old hood and needs a good makeover. What can I use to not only degrease but take it down to the bare surface? Afterwards, what can I apply to help in easy clean-up for later on? Thanks!
Answers:
If the hood is metal, first clean with a degreaser and rinse thoroughly. You might even try the new Mr. Clean sponge. Works well.
Anyway, once cleaned, if metal, use a metal primer and then paint with a high gloss paint. It may be more shine than what you are use to, but the gloss will enable you to clean it. If the paint is peeling, sand with 000steel wool first, then prime.
Oxyclean foam cleaner(degreaser) is excellent.
Acetone nail polish remover, but make sure it states acetone on the bottle. This is the heavy duty stuff. I use it to clean my stove hood, and it cuts right through the grease.
But do be careful not to get any in the pilots, and try not to inhail too much of it.
I always use Comet bathroom spray cleaner on stove top & stove hoods for the tough grease & grime they get. Spray surface with comet cleaner, let soak for a few minutes & wipe clean. For extra tough grime sprinkle with comet powder & scrub with a Scotch green scratch pad. Good as new.
As for stripping the paint, a good metal paint stripper should do it, I would just replace the hood instead of painting it.
