Pour about a cup of baking soda in and follow it with a cup of white vinegar , when done fizzing flush with boiling water. This will help unclog drains and freshed it. Linda V.

pour a litre of buttermilk down it. the enzymes in the buttermilk will eat up the smelly bacteria & sweeten the disposal right up
Run some lemon, lime or orange peels through it! If that doesn't work try a thick baking soda paste.
Try using some baking soda or fresh lemons.
Pour some baking soda down the drain.
Dump some baking soda down it .turn it on w/ water.then dump some more and let it sit.
I've heard you should drop in ice cubes to keep it clean and keep the blades sharp.
Put a lemon down the disposal now and then. Also it seems oranges work. I clean mine out after I finish dishes even if I havent used it. I run it with a bit of dish soap after I empty the sink, then rinse.
Pour baking soda down it. Be sure to run it with the water running for awhile after pouring the baking soda in it to prevent it from clogging up.
baking soda or a bit of bleach
Fill the sink with hot soapy water every day and when you drain it, run the disposal. That will keep it from smelling. You MUST run water through it every day to keep the stink back. (My Dad learned this when my mother got to sick to help in the kitchen.)
First, remember to run water for 15-20 seconds after you have ground up all your waste. This flushes the waste down the line, and eliminates some odors.
Next, try running some baking soda through the garbage disposal. The stuff is cheap. Use a whole box.
Then run citrus rines through the unit occassionally.
If you use the other side to wash dishes in a two-sided sink you can rinse off the soapy water in the side with the unit. This will help clean the unit a bit, also.
throw arm and baking soda..
Run citrus chinks through it, then pour in some baking soda.
i use baking soda and lemon juice paste and the peel from the lemon. it will freshen up the disposal instantly.
coffee grounds and always plenty of running water when you do use it and every day at end of day.
Try putting a sliced lemon thru it,the smell will leave. Some say that ice will clean it,but I would worry about the blades. The little rubber top comes off,be sure to wash that with some good strong detergent.Bacteria grows in that moisture.
I pour some bleach down the drain from time to time & scrub my sink out. Baking soda works to absorb the smell. Use ice to sharpen your blades.

I don't put fruit rinds (or eggshells) down my disposal. I don't think they get cut up as well as other things & when they don't wash down the drain the remnants just smell when they rot.

Below is a link to some cleaning site. Check it out. It says to use their product, and baking soda and scrub with a (toilet) brush.

ooh, yay Linda, vinegar can be used for tons of things. Cleaning counters, grout, mopping floors, cleaning out coffee makers. I'm going to try it in my disposal too.
Just throw in a lemon (cut into quarters) and turn it on using cold water. The rind cleans the inside and it smells like fresh lemon!
