How do I keep my kitchen sponge from smelling mildewy?

Question:I rinse and wring out my kitchen cleaning sponges, but in no time they start to smell so mildewy. How do I prevent this from happening?

Answers:
Put 1 quart of water in your dishpan. Add in 3 Tbsp. bleach. Soak your sponges for 5 minutes. Squeeze out and let dry.

For counters, I use vinegar & water or bleach & water and use toweling to dry.

I use sponges only when scouring pans or the sink itself.

The sponge spreads germs all over the kitchen surfaces.

throw them out and get new ones!or soak in sum bleach diluted with water but i wud toss them! thats nasty and germy
soke it in bleach
1. Zap it in the microwave for 10 seconds.
OR
2. Soak it for half an hour in disinfectant or baby bottle sterilizing fluid.

Prevention is better than cure, if possible, get it dried asap after use.
Do you have a dishwasher? I put mine on the top rack or sometimes in the utensil holder. It really helps. But I only do that once. Even the super hot water in the dishwasher won't kill all the germs they hold. I've never found anything that works better than a dishrag.
You can wet the sponge and put it in the Microwave for about 25 - 35 seconds. It will kill the bacteria on the sponge.
wash them, and use a clean one daily
Soak it in some vinegar or bleach and water.
Don't use them in the kitchen at all, they retain more bacteria than your kids hands.
you should get a new sponge every week., for sanitary reasons.
Use anti-bacterial washing up liquid. Or, rinse with any of the following: bleach (taking care not to spot your clothes), vinegar (malt vinegar, not expensive wine or cider vinegar), biolgical washing powder. You can also wash dishes in biological washing powder.
i sure you know to change them often but i also pop them in the microwave for 2minutes a few times a week make sure theyre rinsed good and that theyre wet never put a dry sponge in the microwave
Wash it in the dishasher.
Since sponges are so inexpensive, I just buy a 4 pack once a month, and every week I throw one out and use a new one. I know exactly what you are talking about. The smell gets on your hands too! So, just use new ones. That way you always know that it's clean and fresh, and not spreading anything. During the week though, ALWAYS let them air dry!
let soak in beach whichever preferred best let soak for a few min. then rinse out with water if not it'll damage and hang dry.
don't keep your sponges long. you can put them in the dish washer when you run a load or pour a little bleach on them to disinfect. Check out the flylady.com site she talks about cleaning the kitchen and other areas of the home
