Does anyone own an iRobot Roomba?
Question:What are the pros & cons? Is it easy to operate? Does is work well? I was considering it as a gift.
Answers:
I have one and I think its great. We bought one for my Mom a fews years back and she at first thought it was a waste of money BUT... since then she has purchased one for every member of our family b/c she liked it so much. It really does do a good job on the carpet. The only Con I can think of is that I have one room with super thick carpet and occasionally it gets hung up and shuts itself off (pretty rare though). Also depending on the size of your rooms it needs to re-charge in between cleanings. I can do one or two rooms before I need to re-charge it. I know my Mom does a room a day. Just puts it in there and lets it go... comes back later and gets it to re-charge. They have one that will return itself to the charger as well. Hope this helps.
I wish I did. My husband swears they dont work and are just a waist of money...
My mom is getting one for mothers day from my step dad.
His mom has had one for about 5 years and swears by it.
I would recommend it.
I have a Roomba Discovery and love it. I wouldn't suggest it replaces the traditional vacuum, but it is great for a day-to-day or midweek refresher.
Pros = it does it for you. You sit it in the middle of the room and come back when it sings to you that it is done.
Cons = doing a large area can be tricky. The battery life is short for a large area, but they sell larger capacity batteries.
I have had a Roomba for about 1 1/2 years. Just love it. Just ordered 2 more so I don't have to drag one downstairs all the time. My kids let the original go in there rooms and you would be surprised what Rosie brings out. Buy it you'll like it!! Keep it for your self!!
When they work, they are *phenomenal*. You just can't believe a little thing like that can vacuum so well.
The downside is this: they break down. I have new carpet that gives off a lot of fuzz and that fuzz gets into everything and eventually (after 100 runs or so) clogs things up. I have to take my little Roomba apart and clean it out, then put it back together.
So if your intended gift recipient isn't handy with a Philips-head screwdriver, you might not want to give this gift. But if he's a tinkerer or engineer, it should be just fine. There are lots of web pages out there that take you step-by-step through the process.
Good luck,
Doug
