What is the best and easiest way to straighten up shoulder pads in a mans suit jacket?
Question:I have some suits and the shoulder pads look lumpy, and it doesn't seem like you can simply iron them.
Are there any tricks on how lumpy shoulder pads can be made nice and flat again without damaging delicate and costly fabrics?
Thank you!
Answers:
Take them to a seamstress or tailor.
Unfortunately, there isn't any way to make the shoulder pads "unlumpy" because once the filler has become "dislodged", it's not going to stay put. What I would do is carefully cut the shoulder pads out and replace them with new shoulder pads. You can purchase these at most sewing stores or fabric stores and this will help the problem be resolved. Just be careful when you have them cleaned. If you have the suits dry cleaned, ask the cleaners to either take the pads out before cleaning or YOU take them out and re-attach after you get them home. Sometimes the dry cleaning fluid will also interact with the synthetic fill in the shoulder pads OR they simply become lumpy from the heat and/or overcleaning. If they're removed, they can be re-attached with a stitch or two on either side of each pad. Hope this helps! It works for me.
starch them and then carefully iron them using a damp cloth between the iron and the pads so as to not damage the material.make sure the damp cloth is made of 100% cotton and that it white in colour.
walmart (in the fabric department) or JoAnn's fabrics, or Hancock Fabrics or whichever place you have in your area usually has pin in shoulder pads (of course you could stitch them into place yourself. They have light, medium and heavy shoulder padding...it's inexpensive. If you have to unstitch the lining at the bottom of the suit to get to the shoulder pads then do so carefully. There are seamstresses out there who would do this for you if you don't have the time.
