How do you kill bacteria on a sponge in the microwave?

Question:

Answers:
You wet it and you microwave it for like 30 seconds.

my mother just usually washes it in a dishwasher, but is is aslo safe to buy a new sponge. 75 cents wont hurt.
sponges just colect bacteria i wouldnt use them even if i microwaved them.
well, bacteria hates heat. So, if you use the "sanitize" cycle in your dishwasher, it should do the trick. Basically, if you have a dishwasher, when you are done putting the dishes in, just toss in your sponge with it.

Otherwise, you can pour rubbing alcohol on it. The microwave, hypothetically could work...but it might heat it up to the point of melting the sponge. I like the dishwasher, as it is programmed to do just this very thing. You can wash a ton of stuff in your dishwasher, including baseball caps. Very handy little machine. :)
set it on 120 seconds, they will be dead! Bleach will do the same thing.
First, wet the sponge, wring it out, place it in the center of the microwave,I have a 1200 watt unit so I only set the timer for 45 seconds.Keep an eye on it because it WILL burst into flames if you nuke it too long.I have been doing this for years.I don't reccomend the dishwasher because sometimes the sponge will fly around in the machine and land on the heating element on the bottom and burn and it sometimes clogs the water outlet.
The New York Times reported about a month ago that they put a sponge into the microwave and then had a chemist analyse what was left. Bacteria survived.
Throw away the sponges. They are truly disgusting if you read about what lives in all those tiny holes.
I buy terry washcloths in bulk. Target sells them. You can put them in a bowl every day with water and bleach and everything that's living on the washcloth just dies. No germs, no icky stuff, no things to make you sick.
Rinse after soaking and let dry on a rod.
They cost less than a dollar each when you buy a bunch and they last longer than those grungy sponges.
You can get 6 for 90 cents so just get a new one.
