What are the black dots/streaks that sometimes end up on plastic cups after being washed in the dishwasher?

Question:And is it harmful?

Answers:
most likely the heat of the dishwasher is changing the plastics properties (it is burning it...lots of plastics can't go in the dishwasher). If you put in a thin plastic, it will just melt completely, for example.

In general, anytime you are doing something that visibly affects the plastic, you risk it coming off on the things you eat/drink from it. I am a bit down on that stuff, and suggest you not "injest" non-stick or plastics, etc. In a best case scenario, you just pass it through your system. In a worst case scenario, these chemicals are contributing to cancers and other bad stuff in our bodies. Call me crazy... I like glass and ceramics in my kitchen! :)

one time i took apart a plastic tumbler to wash it in the dishwasher. and both parts melted soo badly that they can no longer fit together...but we still use them. we just dont put plastic in the dishwasher anymore. it's best to use dawn and handwashthem anyways.
