What is the best method of cleaning nicotine stains off of walls. l am only going to be allowed to wash them.?
Question:i am cleaning someones house this week and they have bad nicotine stains on the walls (which l am supposed to just wash) l dont know how long it's been since they have been painted or anything. not even sure how many years of smoke are on them.

There is a cleaning product called T.S.P. that will do it. A paint store would have it . Its serious stuff so read and follow the directions carefully. Greased Lightning is another useful product almost as effective as T.S.P.

Go to your local hardware and buy TSP( tri-sodium phosphate). Mix with bleach and water. Be prepared to scrub. Rinse with clean water afterwards.

Hello...I don't envy you your task! I always find bleach and water to be the most effective, but there are some good products on the market for this type of thing.
would you be allowed to use a mister clean magic eraser, its just a special sponge, I use it for alot of things. Otherwise try vinegar.
I do alot of painting and primer and paint is the only way to eliminate them that I know of . Keep in mind that flat paint , which is commonly used on inside walls is unwashable satin or semigloss can be washed by taking a larrge sponge and bucket and wiping ,rinse sponge and wipe again but the results ccould vary along the wall and you end up looking worse than if you leave them alone. My advise is to back off this one and tell them they cannot be washed to the level that yo would like them to be so you would prefer not to
I can suggest sugar soap, I would´t use bleach it will only cause the paint to turn more yellow than they are already. I also suggest you wash one wall, see how it turn´s out. If the wall´s are so damaged by the smoke , they will have to be painted again.

I would use dish soap and water with a cup of bleach.
Do the best you can as smoke ruins houses almost beyond fixing. I have my own cleaning service and I will not clean houses that are contaminated by smoke. I always tell the customers to rip out all carpet and draperies. Then the walls must be sprayed with bleach allowed to dry and then painted several times to cover the staining of smoke.
All else fails go to a quality paint store for advice on the right paint to cover the smell and staining.
My parents both smoked and we add an annual 'wash the walls' day. We used ammonia and water, but the real secret is to rinse OFTEN with clean water. Change the water in your bucket as soon as it gets dirty. Most of the discoloration comes of quickly, but it can be streaky. You will have better results if the paint is semi gloss rather than flat paint. Flat paint often washes off as quickly as the dirt. Good luck!
