How do you clean OLD linoleum floors. They need a good cleaning, but I do not want to ruin them...?

= O !!! How do I clean them, really need good cleaning.
Answers:
I had the same problem; IOur house was built in the 40s, and I don*t think the people who lived here knew what a mop and bucket was for. I used ammonia ; about 2 cups to a bucket of hot water. Rinse well; You may have to do this 2 or 3 times, but it will come clean. Be sure you rinse really well or your shoes will stick to the floor when you walk on it.
Get some Lestoil. Not all stores carry it but Walmart does. Majority of discoloration on linoleum is actually caused by tar stains. Mix about 1/2 cup - 1cup Lestoil and mop with it. It has a smell to it but they will clean up the linoleum nicely,
Most ammonia based products should work great. There also some good floor cleaners on the market that will strip off the old wax on old linoleum. The tough part is that if they are that old, they probably need to be waxed to bring the shine back.
Steam.
