How do I get rid of the smell of dog pee that has soaked into floorboards?

Question:We have bought an old house, with some lovely old oak flooring, and this we would like to keep on display (varnished etc). However the previous own of the house had a dog and the dog has clearly pee'd regularly in one particualr area. Whilst this has been sanded, the smell of the pee stil lingers. Can onyone suggest any way of getting rid of the smell or wil it go away when i seal in the flooring with polyeurathene varnish?

Answers:
You can use this stuff called Kilz. If you can't find that, then look for a solution that kills bacteria. Usually Kilz will do it and then you paint your varnish or whatever over it. That should seal any left over odors in and you won't smell it. It is hard to use anything strong on the floors since they are wood... but even just sealing it should work. Depending on how old the house and when the floors were put in, there may be a pad underneath that has trapped that smell in it. That is where the Kilz would help. If it is just the hardwood, sealing should do the trick. Good luck! Hope this helped!

use a very strong cleaning liquid, it will have a very strong smell and it will drown out the pee smell
Cover each area with baking soda shaken directly onto the floor. Cover it if necessary. Let sit for a week. Repeat if need be.
even though the stains are old and have set i would try urine be gone spray from your local pet store as it actually kills/destroys the urine enzymes
Cut the peed-on boards out, and replace that part of the floor. Do you have pets? If so they may try to mark on top of any spot they can smell urine on.
POUR VINEGAR ON THE SPOT AND LEAVE OVERNIGHT. RINSE WITH WATER AND LET DRY, THEN POLYEURETHANE. YOU MAY HAVE A WORSE PROBLEM THAN YOU THINK, IF THE URINE WENT IN BETWEEN THE BOARDS, THEY WILL HAVE TO BE TAKEN UP. I HAVE ALSO USED A PRODUCT CALLED ODORS AWAY, SEE IF YOU CAN FIND IT ONLINE. WE BOUGHT AN OLD HOUSE AND IT HAD PEE SMELL AND MOTHBALLS, WE USED ODORS AWAY AND IT WENT AWAY.
change the floorboard and spray febreeze
Piss on the floorboards yourself, that way the smell of yours will cancel out the smell in the floorboard.
I would t think the two or three coats of poly you'll be putting down, would seal the area. A product called, Kid's and Pet's stain and odor remover works well. You could treat the area, let it dry, then poly over, "bye bye, pet aroma".
I would use baking soda and sprinkle it on the smell. I'd leave it for a day or two. Then if that didn't work I'd go to a pet store and aske them what could be done to clean it up. They would know.
