I use a product called spiced air.I used it from the time I started my business of carpet cleaning and restoration.
My neighbor has a steam cleaner and she puts febreze into the water and I swear even her kids hair smells like it and it is wonderful, very clean smelling and fragrant but not too overpowering. I have put it in my mop water and it smells good, but loses its effect on tile floor after a day, I think she runs her machine twice a week and I have never smelled anything so wonderful for carpet, she also uses soap for the cleaning part, but febreze for the smell
Bissel makes a lavender scented carpet shampoo that I used to like a lot. Now I use a more neutral scent and then I spray a little Fabreeze over the carpet after cleaning but before it is completely dry.

I like a clean smell or no smell. So I use white vinegar. It gets rid of the source of a lot of unpleasant smells and leaves no smell after it drys.
Or open the windows after it rains. I love that smell.
