Gross garbage question - maggots?
Question:I just saw that my kitchen garbage (which is only a few days old) had maggots crawling around in it! I can't do anything with the garbage now since it is the evening, but I double bagged it, then put it out on our upstairs balcony. Will it be okay out there? I also have a closed in area where the stairs are to go downstairs (we live in an upstairs apartment), should I put it there instead? I just don't want them to get worse, but I also don't want flies all over the place.
Or does anyone know of anything I could put in the garbage bag that will kill the maggots??

Any insect spray will kill them, hair spray will kill them, bleach or liquid soap will kill them. Either place will be fine as long as animals can't get to it.
If you tied off the bag they should die from lack of oxygen.

In the hot weather you should change your garbage each day.
Wash your garbage container with a bleach solution (bleach and water)and that should sanitize it and take care of any eggs that may still be there.
The balcony should be ok.
Any sort of insect spray will kill maggots and flies.
However, if you tied the bag so that it's air tight, the maggots will stay inside. They don't need fresh air. If they do become flies inside the bag, the flies won't be able to get out either. Just put the garbage out when you have an opportunity. And whatever you do, don't open the bag inside the house!
I am confused with your question as I have never had maggots in my kitchen garbage nor in my outside trash containers. What are you putting in the garbage that would create maggots? If you are keeping choppings from raw meat for too long I suppose it could happen. I've just never seen it. To be extra careful, ziplock bag any raw meat cuttings.
