How do we stop our bin from smelling?
Question:Me and my boyfriend moved into a new place a month ago and got a brand new brabantia bin which we thought would prevent smells from escaping as well as look good. We were wrong.
We change the bag once a week and when we do, we clean it out with dettol, let it dry and then put a new bag in. Yet the bin still stinks after a day. Right now, it's smelling with the lid closed!
Does anyone have the same problem? Do you know what we can clean it with so that it doesn't smell so bad, as obviously dettol is not doing the trick.

I've just asked my friend about this. He is an authority on these matters having owned a 3.99 bin for the last 9 months. Not so fancy as yours, and certainly cheaper I'd warrant, but he lives in filthy squalor so it still stinks to high heaven. He's no answer to the problem, and he refuses to live a cleaner life, but has even thought of swilling it out with thrice blessed holy water. Even that would be cheaper than your brabantia bin!
Actually, to be serious, my mum used to buy Jeyes dustbin powder and sprinkle it liberally in the bin. That's what you need.
Change the bag every day! Yuck...
You only need to change your bag once a week?
When we change ours I put a bit of bleach in the bottom with some hot water and leave it for half hour or so then pour out and leave to dry.. seems to work. Kim and Aggy would probably say some lemon juice or something?
Wash it?!
You change the bag once a week? It's going to flippin stink then isn't it! It needs to be changed daily. It's the rubbish causing the smell, not the bin.
just dont use it !!!!!!!!!!...
Ugggh, smelly
Put bleach in it , and let it sit for a little while. Scrub it down good, and then change bags daily.
try bicarbonate of soda. it is safe to use and cheap , just put a spoonful in and put hot water in and wash it out, it will smell lovely and fresh. Also wash out your tins and recycle as they are usually the most smelliest culprits. recycle your fruit and veg peelings in a kitchen composter and with luck you will have a sweeter bin x
Sounds like you should change the bag every day, but I would contact Brabantia.
I find the best thing to keep a fresh smelling bin is to give it a good scrub in warm soapy water, then dry it and when dry wipe some essential oil (I like lemon or lavender) around the bin using kitchen towel. You could then leave the kitchen towel in the bottom of the bin.
Maybe you could buy a smaller bin to put in scraps of food, etc. that might smell and reserve the larger one for non smelly waste. The smaller bags should be cheaper and easier to replace.
It's a matter of simple chemistry, by the sound of it. A week is too long to keep food remains in the bin, especially in the summer. They'll decompose and inevitably stink. I use a 12 (I think) litre bin for organic waste and reserve the bigger bin for recyclable stuff, such as plastic and tins. You could do the same, investing in a smaller bin for your organic waste (but you'd need to change the bag every couple of days!!) and keeping your big, fancy bin for 'cleaner', recyclable rubbish that can linger longer without smelling.
cut an onion in half put it under bag in bottom of bin, works i promise you
A week is too long to keep food scraps - they soon start to rot and smell in an enclosed space. Even small amounts will cause problems - it's what you put in the bin, not the amount, so the only solution is to empty the bin more often - every other day should be OK.
It might help if you put your food items inside a small plastic bag, tie it up, then put that inside the bin, so that, in effect it is all double wrapped - extra trouble, I know, but it would reduce any smell considerably.
Use baking soda. Good luck getting rid of the smell.
Good old stalwart bicarb solution and leave to dry before reassembling
