Both are caused by viruses but the symptoms are different. With a cold the symptoms start gradually over a period of a few days. The flu starts quickly, with a high fever developing over a few hours.
Cold: Sneezing, runny nose, congestion, tiredness, cough, sore throat sometimes.
Flu: Sudden onset of fever, sore throat, muscle aches, exhaustion, some congestion.
A cold is caused by the ever changing, Rhino virus which causes runny nose, cough, maybe body aches. Flu, which is a very different disease, usually comes, believe it or not, Chinese pigs. It is different virus for each years flu outbreak but generally flu hits your body hard with fever, aches, stomach and bowel upset are usually featured.
They are both very similar - causing scratchy and sore throat; coughing; sneezing; itchy, watery eyes; chest congestion; headache; and runny or stuffy nose. The flu usually also causes fever and body aches in addition to all those other symptoms.
Contrary to popular belief, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. are NOT symptoms of the "flu". Those are caused by food poisoning or a "stomach bug".
