Answers:
they do both and its crazy. first it depends on the fabric, then the on the temperature youre washing/drying at.
usually when stuff is either washed hot, or dryed hot, it will shrink. especially cotton.
but stretch material stuff, will eventually be come larger. it shouldnt happen after one washing, but over a long period of time.
to keep from having shrinking clothes, wash in cold water, and hang/air dry if possible. any exposure to heat will cause shrinkage.
to delay the time of stretch material enlarging, wash on gentle cycles, dry on gentle cycles. dont hang if the fabric is "stressed". best to fold it so gravity doesnt slowly add to its englarging too. i had a dress like that. i hung it in the closet, and then it was longer lol
it depends on the fabric
Most of the time they do shrink. The heat is what causes this. I have never had any of my clothes get bigger. Unless you wash it in cold water and when it comes out of the wash stretch it and hang dry it.
Provided you follow the care instructions on the label, they should do neither. Not the way you describe, anyway. When clothes are worn they stretch. Then when washed the fibers return to normal. The longer the wear, and the older the clothing, the less the fibers rebound and the clothes will stretch and weaken, eventually tearing.
Shrinkage like you state is caused by drying the clothes at the wrong temperature.
