How do I get rid of bad carpet odor caused by water overflowing?
Question:My toliet overflowed and the water was leaking for about an hour before i realized it. It is taking the carpet a long time to dry. I tried using a steam cleaner to suck up the water but it didn't dry it enough. Now my house smells sour. Please help I can't take the smell any longer!
Answers:
you'll probably need to remve the carpet. Once it has been wet too long and the mold spores set it, nothing will take the smell out.

you might want to call a mold/carpet cleaning company to come out and make sure there is not mold under the carpet. That can even make you sick...
Put a cup with 1 cup of vinegar in each corner of the room. It will help remove the smell
Have you tried leavign a box of open Baking Soda where it stinks? People often leave Baking Soda in their fridge to soak up unwanted smells. Another thing you may want to try is going to the supermarket and picking up some carpet powder stuff. You like pour this nice smelling powder on your carpet and let it sit and then vaccuum it up. See if those help you out.
You might want to have the rug professionally cleaned/ or rent a carpet cleaner for starters. Let it dry and if it still smells sprinkle the carpet with baking soda, let it sit overnight and vacuum up the next day.
