See if this works for you...for every object ask yourself: have I used this in the last 2 weeks? Will I need it in the next 2 weeks? Any "no answers can go in the recycling, or to Goodwill, or to the attic (only if it's very valuable or an heirloom). If you say yes, then find a home for the thing where it can live. If it's something you use only once in awhile, consider a home in the closet or other storage.
Black bag all the clutter, and then pull one thing out at a time and decide what to do with it.
Just take one box and fill it with things that havent touched in 6 months. Dont get rid of the box, just place it somewher handy in case your needs change. I did this several months ago when I moved to a small apartment. Just fill on box, you will be surprised how much less cluttered things will look.
Remember that objects can always be replaced. Start by getting rid of some things you can bear to part with or you think you could replace. Write down or photograph what you got rid of. Look at your list or photos a few months down the road and see how you feel. Most likely, you'll be surprised that you kept them so long in the first place. You'll feel so much better once you learn how to part with material objects. The only things I keep are letters, photos, valuable jewelry, documents, and a few books (which I go through once every couple of years and get rid of again) or things that I currently use. I was a former packrat, my family are packrats, I converted my packrat boyfriend, so I know what I'm talking about. You will not miss the things you part with, you will be happier and more comfortable living a minimalist life.
Divide your room into zones, possibly 5 zones. One for each wall from corner to corner, then the middle of the floor
is it's own zone.
Organize each area--toss trash, decide what stays and what goes. If it doesn't belong in that zone, put it in the right zone for the time being. Do one zone a day. After 5 days the whole room should be done. Now take 15 minutes once or twice a day to return the space to order. Good Luck!
File daily, even if it takes only 3 minutes.
Go to an office supply store and get a spindle for your receipts. It works best bc you don't have to worry about receipts falling out of envelopes and the most recent ones are always on top.
Each time after I shop, I put my receipts on the spindle. If something breaks or is bad, then I know exactly where to go to find the receipt. After a month or so of accumulation, I'll just send the whole bunch to the trash can. Obviously, if you have receipts for big items, appliances or such, you'll want to file those with the instruction booklet in your files.
