What can I use to clean my carpet?

Question:I'm going to rent a carpet cleaner from wal-mart and I have a huge house that all carpet. I was looking for a alternative then the small bottle for 20 bucks that you can buy. it would take many bottles to clean this huge old dirty carpet. (whole house) what can I use becides expencive carpet soap? or is there a cheaper way?

Answers:
Those bottles are concentrated and will go a long way. Read the label to see how many square feet it will do. I find it handy to mix it in a clean empty gallon jug. You're doing a lot at once. Make sure the outdoor humidity is low that day. You'll want the doors and windows open to dry it more quickly (assuming it's summer there too and you don't want the furnace on!).

cheap baking soda will do the trick,
Also get some Fabree Bacterial or Anti Allergy Spray to mist the carpet.
the best stuff to use to clean your carpet is resolve spot shot i used it on a stain that was there when we bought our house in nov 2006 a week ago and omg it worked wonders i highly recomend it
I would buy the carpet cleaner and not put as much cleaner in the machine. I think that the carpet would be ok if it was cleaned with more water than the cleaning liquid. I did that at my mother-in-laws house when I moved in. The carpet looked so clean.
