How do you keep stainless steel silverware from rusting?
Question:It's not the most expensive set but also not the cheapest. It keeps getting rusty looking spots on it when it comes out of the dishwasher- how do I get those spots off?
Answers:
Hand wash it and dry it.
The knife blades are most vulnerable. They are 13 chrome (the rest is usually 18/8). Wash the knives by hand or stop the dishwasher before the drying cycle and dry the knives by hand. Clean up any spots with stainless steel cleaner.
The rusting can have several reasons:
If the coating is silver, you should not mix it with steel in the same load.
In the case of stainless steel: Load machine correctly - avoid items touching. Mixed-quality cutlery can also cause rusting.
In both cases: Avoid prolonged contact with sulphide-rich foods such as eggs, mayonnaise and sea foods, also acidic fruits. Scrape properly before loading. Use pre-rinse program can also avoid rusting.
I have pure stainless steel cutlery and had some months ago the same problem. It vanished after I remembered to re-fill salt to the dishwasher (I recently moved into the apartment and the machine just run out of salt).
If it is any quality at all it will not rust ever.
If it rsts then it is very poor quality and worth very little.
if you put real silver in the dishwasher along with your stnlss steel, the stnlss steel will always rust.
