My microwave is VERY, VERY dirty inside. Should I try to clean it or just trash it and get a new one?
Question:I've had it since freshman year of college ... so it's like 9 years old.
If you think I should try to clean it, what type of cleaning product would work best? I want to make sure it whatever I used is safe and won't cause an issue with the food.
Answers:
an easy way to clean a microwave is to put a bowl of water with some lemon in it. Run the microwave for 2 or so minutes, all the crud on the inside will come off easy, if not get a new one!
I have almost the same problem with mine, so I'm really curious about the answers. I tried to clean it with regular dish washing products but it didn't really work.
I would invest in a new one!. I think you got your moneys worth in that one. If you decide to clean it I would use some kind of dregreaser cleaner.
Put a microwave safe glass full of water in there.
Boil it till it's steaming the inside.
Wait, wipe and repeat a few times.
Finish with a little windex and it'll be good.
I would use a product called Simply Green to clean it, it is environmentally safe and food safe, once you clean it if you spill something wipe it up
It's easy to clean.Take a large bowl of water and microwave it till it boils for about ten minutes.Open the microwave, take some paper towels or towel the stuff will come right off.You can even add lemon juice to the water if you have some.Good Luck
First, heat a cup of water to boiling in the microwave. Then, wipe clean with dish soap and a little bleach. Leave the door open after cleaning for about 5 minutes. Then you are good to go! (Repeat the boiling of water after wiping and you still have any stuck on or dried food residue. Boiling the water makes your job easier!)
Try one of those magic erasers by Mr. Clean. Works wonders in a microwave.

Put some water and a few slices of lemon (or some lemon juice) into a bowl and microwave it for about 5 - 10 minutes. The lemon helps to cut grease and 'unstick' the stuck stuff. Everything should just wipe right off with a damp cloth or sponge. It also freshens the smell. I like this way better then just boiling water.
Try using Windex. If it doesn't come clean, buy a new one. Your old one probably needs to be working longer to heat up food, using up more energy. Not to mention leaving hot/cold spots in your food.
I just bought a over the stove microwave and there is a hugh difference in how little time it takes to get hot food. Less time means less energy being used. Makes me very very happy !! :)
Leakage from microwave ovens is not the danger that it used to be. But if you have had it for 9 years, then personally I would replace it.
If we can get a new one in the UK for less than $50, then it would probably cost you about $35 in the States (don't ask me why!).
If you get a new one, then after you have used it, just use a dry paper kitchen towel and wipe the inside out. Only takes a minute. You will need to give it a good clean sooner or later. Just puts off the inevitable day !
shud clean it often after use. well, u can put slices of lemon to dish away the smell.
Spray some 409, shut the door and walk away. Come back about 20 min later and wipe off. Allowing the cleaning product to sit is the way to go! Works every time!!
Follow with a quick water wash with a wet rag.
Well if its that old, I would just get a new one if you can afford it. If not, trying mixing baking soda with water and lemon in a bowl and turn your microwave on for 10 minutes, the steam and mixture should loosen all the crud up!
Put lemon slices in a microwave safe bowl filled with water. Put it in the microwave and turn it on for about 2 minutes. Use paper towels to wipe everything off. The steam from the water loosens all of the stuck on stuff. To shine it up go over it with a little white vinegar.
Clean it. Use a micro-safe dish and put a half cup of white vinegar and fill with water. Put it on for 5 minutes. Remove very carefully standing to the side while you pull out so you don't get hurt. Wipe off the surfaces and repeat as necessary. When done wipe off with water and vinegar and stand open a few minutes to air out.
if it works good i suggest you clean it tey using bleach with water also use kaboom it works wonders. if that dont do it then just buy a new one
Spray it down with Windex or 409 and let it sit a few minutes and wipe out.
Spray is with Scrubbing bubbles... let it sit, and wipe it down.
I read somewhere that if you leave a bowl of ammonia in it overnight, the stuff will come off easily, and it will be deodorized.
The easiest way to clean a microwave is to put a bowl of water in it and heat it until it boils, then wipe out the inside of the walls and doors of the microwave with a degreaser or if you're into Organic stuff...use Watkins Organic Cleaner. It's really concentrated and I only use 1 oz in a 24 oz spray bottle and fill the rest with distilled or filtered water and it cleans great. I've even used it on my grandson's face to remove black permenant Sharpie marker and it only took one drop (full strength) on a wet wash cloth. Gentle as can be. The steam from the boiled water and the cleaner together work great and it smells fresh and clean too, but not heavily scented. The steam loosens the dirt inside including greasy messes. Watkins also makes a Degreaser that you can use in the Kitchen or in your laundry to remove grease stains.
