How do I get musky smells out of my house?

Question:My house has a musky smell in it. I clean all the time and I use air freshner and it still isn't working. Also none of the plug-ins seem to work. Is there any that work like they say the will?

Answers:
Use charcoal. It is composed of carbon, and as it is carbon, it absorbs the smell.

It is mold. You need a fungicide to kill it, and a deodorizer.

Try opening all the windows for a few hours a day. That should help. You need to find the source of the smell. There is something put away or a spot that draws moisture that is causing the smell. Once you air out the house for about 3 days, start looking for the source of the smell. (It could be in the basement, crawl space under the house.)

It's probably due to mold or mildew growing in warm, dark places. Clean out cupboards, shelves, closets.

Motivate air movements with a couple of fans, open windows (and maybe back door, side door, etc.) a few hours during the day.

Burning candles (doesn't matter if they're scented!) will also get rid of bad smells, short-term.
i have air wick plug in night light they work awsome everyone asks me what do i have that smells so good in my house so i suppose it works great. they are pricy but worth it b/c it keeps my house smelloing great
get a dehumidifier. That odor will disappears without trying to mask it.
You should find the source of the odor. Sounds like you may have a mold problem which could be under your house or anywhere there is moisture quite frequently. We had a fungus growing underneath our house and had to have someone come out and kill it. The fungus caused my house to constantly have a funny..musty smell. Make sure you also check the insulation in your attic to make sure it has not gotten wet ..if by chance you might have had a roof leak. Good luck!
Someone else mentioned charcoal - I found the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT carbon odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. It works so much better than all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. and gels and oils that say keep away from fabric, etc. and just don't eliminate odors. Just put a few of these around the house in problem areas. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying
I would try backing soda. Putting a little in small containers around your house and wait a few days. Backing soda absorbs bad smells.
