Removing soot from furniture?
Question:My cat went up the chimney yesterday and covered our chairs with soot on his return! The covers come off and are washable, but should I remove excess soot before washing and how sshould I do that please, as if I rub it will just rub it in.
Thank you
Answers:
Use Shout or Spray and Wash and throw it in the washer.
Try taking some of the excess soot , using Sellotape
It wouldn't hurt to vacuum up any loose debris prior too washing.
we recently had a housefire
Here is what you need to do
First, do not apply anythindg wet to the soot as it will only spread it out worse & sink it into your fabric
Second.. vacume, if possible
Next get a rubber sponge (celaning companies that specialize in post-fire restoration use these... I found one at Wal-Mart for @ $4). the rub the rubber sponge over the sooted areas to pick up the soot (kind of like using an eraser)... if you can't find a rubber sponge, a large rubber eraser will work for smaller spots (like the old pink pearl erasers)
Then... wash... you want cold water, detergent & added Borax or Baking Soda
If there is any soot remaining. DO NOT PUT IN DRYER.. put back in washing mashine with 1/2 cup Purple Power & fill with cold water & let soak overnight, then allow to complete wash cycle (but don't add any other cleaners to the Purple Power)
I like the idea using the vacuum, put the suction on low and go over the covers then wash.
I would get alot of duct tape and try and get it off with the duct tape first. Then I'd try vacuming it up.
