Organization...?
Question:My boyfriend is out of town for the weekend, and I'm cleaning his apartment. It's an absolute mess. I've cleaned worse, having worked in housekeeping for years. However, I'm thinking I should pick up some things to help get his papers and knicknacks in order. Is there anything you would suggest using?
Answers:
Since your boyfriend has not been able to get around to organizing himself, your best bet would be to put all of the supplies he will need right at his fingertips. That way he won't be able to procrastinate by saying that he doesn't have what he needs.
For his papers, get a plastic file box and some file folders to go inside it. All he has to do is write a label on each file folder and start sorting.
For his knick knacks, shelving is always the best way to display those. Just remember that the more knick knacks you have, the more things you will have to clean, and move to dust the furniture underneath. Make sure they are truly knick knacks that he loves and wants in his space. If he can live without them, box them up for him to either donate or sell.
A black trash bag? But seriously, how will your boyfriend react when he finds out that you have gone through his personal papers? Personally, I would set aside time with him to organize his papers and thin out the knickknacks.
Get some file boxes and sort his papers: bills, bank statements, receipts, trash, shred, etc. Keep a short term file for bills to be paid, etc where he pays the bills. The rest can go into a closet.
For the knickknacks, are you handy? Could you install some shelves on the wall for him to display his most prized objects? Keeping them together as a collection will make the rest of the room seem less cluttered. Then box the others or give them away.
