Can I use soap and water to keep my carpet clean?

Question:My father keeps cleaning his carpet with soap and water. And by soap I mean Soap like for dishes and some powder stuff called ajax.

Answers:
I don't know if thats such a good idea.
If it's not rinsed properly if will become sticky and cause everything from your shoes to stick to it, causing the washed spots to become dark.
I would recommend using a spot treatment for carpet.
Hope this helps.

Yes. but only then, when your carpet is made up of cotton. If of any other fabric like velvet, synthetic etc, then there are chances of shrinking and it will take a lot of time to dry as these fabrics are thick.
I don't think thats a very good idea. They make carpet cleaner for a reason. In time using dish soap will ruin the carpet. If something is spilt on the carpet where there is dish soap you could have a big mess. I use a carpet cleaning machine that you can rent at Wal-Mart. It may cost a bit but at least you know your carpet is clean when your walking bare foot on it.
