the least toxic to humans is, believe it or not, white vinegar and hot water --- okay i have to say that won't smell good for the 1st hour BUT hear me out, the smell will change into a fresh smell . ... you can also light large candles to make the smell change faster. remember, we deal with enough chemicals in this world. minimizing the chemicals we touch is a good thing for our health seriously
walmart sells the best ,i use the animal one , cost about $17 for a gallon
I like the bissel carpet shampoo. It works well in the carpet shampooer and smells really fresh.
i use what ever one is called for by the manufacturer...but i also add a scoop of OXY Clean.
it makes it smell nice and gives you extra cleaning power.

I use clothes soap and some fabric softener in my carpet shampoo machine. The scent stays longer and the fabric softener makes the carpet VERY soft and smelling great. Use 1/2 the amount you would use in a load of laundry. You dont have to buy soap for the carpet!
i've used oxyclean several times & have had good success w/ it.
It's already been said, but have to agree with white vinegar. It is amazing. Use it in my laundry in the fabric softener cycle, too, and it's amazing how the smell doesn't stay in the clothes.

White vinegar does so many things. Eliminates ants' chemical trail, keeps eggs from cracking while boiling - just tons of things..
We always have Woolite on hand for fine fabics. So that is what I use. It is a great cleaner and it smells good too.
It suds up a lot, but I just make sure that I rince it good with clean water.
