Why are there ridges on the sides of a dust pan?

Question:I noticed this while I was cleaning at work. There are ridges on both sides of the counter dust pan we use. Me and a co-worker weren't sure if it was there for no reason, but I noticed it on other dust pans.

Answers:
The ridges on a dust pan are put there to make the pan stronger, more ridged, less flexible, so it doesn't break so easily.

It's to use the broom on after you've swept... it will knock off any particles or hairs or whatever stuck to the broom...
