Leather just has to be worn in. There ain't no way around it. I asked my dad the same thing about my Justin boots, and he said that I just had to wear 'em in.
Good luck getting that jacket to be comfy!

I found some interesting answers, from alcohol to hair conditioner to Thompson's Water sealer(!)

They apply to smooth leather, which I assume your jacket is.

To soften a leather BELT (but description just said "leather"):
1. Use rubbing alcohol.
2. Just put some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and run it on to open up the leather.
3. Then rub Vaseline on it to make it soft.
(see wikihow link)

The hair conditioner was to soften leather shoes.

thompson's water sealer:
Found at Epinions review, see #2

"Actually softens the leather " Of course, will waterproof it, too.

I'd try any of these on an inconspicuous spot before applying to the entire jacket.

Sounds like you got a good deal, and hope the jacket makes you feel great!
