Your best bet would be to rent a steam cleaner from your local grocery store.
Using piping hot water will disinfect and clean the carpet all the way through. If you use a topical solution it'll just clean the surface and won't remove any dust mites or other creepy crawlies in there!
Did you know that your carpet can hold 8 times it's weight in toxin filled dirt and you can't even see the trapped dirt that your carpet is hiding.
What can you do? Vacuum with a Well Sealed High Quality HEPA Vacuum Cleaner that can do a much better job of cleaning your carpets then the cheaper vacuum cleaners found at most department stores. Low quality vacuum cleaners are not sealed well! Even many of the so called filtered ones often leak air through gaps in their cases causing dirty air to blow back into your indoor environment!
Steam cleaning can kill dust mites and bacteria. A good doormat will stop a lot of junk right at the door. Take your shoes off when entering your house and you make it a much cleaner/safer place for baby.
make a solution of baking soda and water. About 50/50. Pour it on the stain. Now pour on a solution of vinegar and water, about 50/50. When it is done bubbling, blot up the wet spot with an old towel. When you have gotton it as dry as you can with that, use paper towels.
If you rent a carpet cleaner, do the same thing with the vinegar and baking soda, but then you can just suck up the extra water with the machine. If the baby is starting to crawl, shampoo the rug is a good idea at any-rate. After stain treating and shampooing the rug, go over it one more time, but instead of shampoo and some fabric softener to the machine. It will make the carpet softer for baby, and make it smell nice
