Tips of white shirt collars have brown discoloration?
Question:Over the last couple of years, every single button down white shirt (I guess usually cotton/polyester) that I have purchased, has the tips of the collar turn brown after washing. I can't get it out with bleach and it just ruins the shirt for wearing. Any thoughts as to what's causing this and how to prevent it from happening?
Answers:
I have seen a couple problems.
1. The iron was too hot when I ironed, and the collar tips are especially sensitive - causing scalding on the fabric. I dropped the iron temp down and had fewer problems.
2. Quality of shirt. I've seen problems with cheap thread that causes discoloration. I avoid blends because of this.
3. Collar material - some manufacturers, so compensate for flimsy cloth, put filler cloth inside the collar, which can cause problems. This is a "you get what you pay for" issue. I've tended to go with better quality shirts for this reason. I like LL.Bean, Jos. A. Bank, and of course Brooks Brothers.
I know exactly what you are talking about, my Fiances white dress shirts are like that or "were'. I took a Little bit of Tide and put on a Toothbrush and scrubbed the tips with it real well and then washed them. It Works, it all came clean..
