My bedroom has this very stale smell to it, How do I make it smell fresh without using air freshners ?

Put some vinegar in a glass dish and set it out. Most smells are caustic, and the vinegar will neutralize them.
When you get up in the morning, open the curtains/blinds and the windows. The fresh air will freshen up your room and the sunlight, providing there is any, will kill any nasties in your bedroom. Then only close your window and curtains/blinds when it gets dark.
Without air fresheners? Hhmm, maybe you can find the problem of why it smells, and do a cleaning of your room, and if you cant find what smells, then you may be outta luck. Do you have any pets? If so, smell them, and if they smell like your bedroom, you have your problem.

Check your air conditioner filter, this is a very common cause for musty odors. Plus if your bathroom is adjoining the bedroom make sure to turn on the vent fan when showering. The steam could be filtering into your bedroom.

Also, sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and let sit while you go to work, then vacuum when you get home.
Clean all bedding, sprinkle baking soda on the mattress, too and then vacuum off after a while. If it's old and musty smelling, lay it out in the sun for a while, then flip it over. Then sun will kill stuff living inside it (gross, I know).
Clean window treatments.
Spray Oust or a vinegar solution in the room.
Get linen spray for your sheets.
Make sure any adjoining bathroom is also aired out and the the vent fan is working properly. Use it while showering (then turn it off so as not to vent all your heat/air conditioning).
Make sure to change the air filter in your unit as required.
Don't let dirty laundry pile up.
